Six Basic Products for Natural Hair

Basic hair products every naturalista should have!

Hey! How is our hair doing? Pretty moisturized or dry? Nevertheless, whatever state your hair is in now, Viola to the rescue! Lol. Let me start by telling you guys how pissed i was yesterday because my hair didn’t come out the way i envisaged. I did some styling and couldn’t wait to rock it the next day but hair didn’t agree. Later ended up carrying it all out which looked amazing.

Okay! Enough of the story. For your hair to be healthy and grow well without any form of breakages and scalp related problems, you must give it your time and investments which are not really exorbitant. Now this post is mainly for the beginner or a fellow naturalista at the verge of relaxing her hair because of confusion. Take note that the search engine, google can give you thousands of products to choose from but I understand the confusion. There are essential basic products your hair needs to grow and stay healthy.

SHAMPOO

Shampoo is a cleansing product your scalp needs. Invest in sulphate free shampoos as shampoos that contain sulphates have very high tendencies of stripping the hair of moisture. However, if you discover normal shampoos do not cleanse your scalp well, you can opt for clarifying shampoos as these will thoroughly cleanse your scalp and remove product build-up but clarifying  shampoos can leave the hair dry and frizzy. When using shampoos especially the clarifying ones, be sure to do a pre poo. Pre poo simply means pre shampooing. The essence of this is to help your hair retain moisture during and after shampooing. There are lots of DIY pre poos you can try. I personally prefer the mixture of coconut oil and honey pre poo as my hair is of low porosity and needs all the moisture it can get. Honey does a great job for me because it is a humectant leaving my hair 80% moisturised. (I hate it when my hair feels dry! Lol!). I use Sunny isle extra dark Jamaican black castor oil shampoo. You can try this or other great brands out there but never forget to buy a sulphate free shampoo!

Deep Conditioner

I use Sunny isle Jamaican black castor oil intensive repair mask. While shopping for this, look for one that contains moisturizing ingredients, hydrolysed proteins and sealing ingredients. Deep conditioning is an important natural hair practice as this helps to fortify your hair with moisture and protein, condition your hair strands to prevent  breakage, make hair more manageable,  repair any damage and create better detangling sessions. Don’t just buy a random deep conditioner, buy one that has good slip and will work best for your hair.

Protein treatment

People often ignore this because of fear. The hair is made up of 70% protein which means our hair is mostly made up of protein. The problem is when there is too much of protein or when excessive protein treatment is done on the hair. Protein treatement should be done every 2-3 months depending on your hair porosity and state of hair. If your hair feels limp or gummy, constant experience of hair breakage or you just coloured your hair, then you definitely need a protein treatment. I use ‘Aphogee’. You can use this as well or try other amazing brands.

Mosturiser

You will mainly know good moisturizing products if water is the first ingredient. Please take note that a good moisturizing product should be water based, add moisture to your hair and not make it feel dry and brittle. I love Cantu leave in conditioning repair cream as this not only moisturizes my hair but leaves it incredibly soft.

Sealants

Sealants are mainly products that contain oil and/or butter. I use Jamaican black castor oil and coconut oil. I also make use of baobab oil. For the butter, I use raw shea butter. I love this product so much because it serves many other purposes apart from its hair moisture sealing properties. Some people say it makes their hair soft and mangeable!

Conditioner wash (Co wash)

I use this in between major wash days as I do not want to be shampooing my hair all the time. I love this because it thoroughly cleans and mega conditions my hair leaving my scalp clean!

These are basically the products you should have as a naturalista for your natural hair but for the record I also have some products that make styling a success like Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie, Aunt Jackie’s Curl boss and a lovely hair food called ‘Hair Wonder’ made with 100% natural oils, herbs and shea butter. I need not mention that lovely cooling effect I feel on my hair once applied.

Meanwhile, this is the fifth month of going natural after I chopped off all my relaxed/chemically damaged hair and hair is popping and healthy!
